Syracuse Hancock International Airport - All Information on Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR)

Syracuse Hancock International Airport, is located approximately 8.5 mi/13.5 km from downtown Syracuse in the state of New York, USA. The airport is a joint civil and military airport and it sits just off Interstate 81.

The airport’s IATA code is SYR while the ICAO code is KSYR. The owner of the airport is Syracuse Regional Airport Authority and it is operated by Syracuse Department of Aviation.

Syracuse Hancock International Airport first opened to public use as Clarence E. Hancock Airport on September 17, 1949, replacing the Syracuse City Airport at Amboy.

The airport was expanded several times over the next couple of decades as it grew to become the second largest Upstate NY airport, although they had more departures than the largest airport, Buffalo, had. The airport peaked at more than 3 million passengers during this time.

During the 1980's and the 1990's the airport saw a decrease in scheduled departures, and in the 2004, after less than 1 million passenger movements per year over the last few years, the mayor of Syracuse at the time, Matthew Driscoll, created a television and internet campaign called Fly Syracuse with the intent to lower fares and increase passenger traffic at the airport. After this the airport saw a slight increase peaking at 2,583,193 passengers in 2019, which dropped to 445,183 in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airport has no scheduled international flights as of October 2018, although they still serve diversions and Wheels Up charters.
